Investment team

The clear definition of our investment principles and culture has allowed Neil to draw together an exceptional team of talented investment professionals. Importantly, the team is a deliberately ‘broad church’ that we believe is unique – a carefully selected mix of individuals with very different personal and professional backgrounds, specialism, skills, experience and expertise. The result? Fresh, industry-leading thinking from a team that continually challenges itself to deliver the best possible results for our investors.

The Investment team currently comprises three experienced fund managers and two specialist analysts. While Neil is responsible for the overarching long-term investment strategy and makes final investment decisions across all mandates, the fund managers assist him across a range of tasks, including day-to-day portfolio management duties, meetings with companies and analysts, due diligence, valuation modelling, bespoke research projects and internal reporting. The extensive skills and experience of each of the analysts are applied to provide the fund managers with valuable analysis and support on specific investment opportunities, with responsibilities including due diligence, company valuation modelling, performance monitoring and internal reporting. Their individual specialisms ensure in-depth cross-market coverage and comprehensive support for Neil.

Stephen Lamacraft has a particular focus on the constituents of the FTSE 350 index and other mature international businesses. Saku Saha and Lucinda Crabtree cover earlier-stage investment opportunities, with a particular focus on the health care industry, while Paul Lamacraft and Harry Raikes also cover earlier-stage investment opportunities, with a focus on the technology and industrial sectors.

FTSE350 and mature international businesses

For the six years prior to joining Woodford Investment Management, Stephen made his mark at Invesco Perpetual as a UK fund manager. Responsible for £120m of assets, his strategy focused on fundamental analysis, an approach inspired by his mentor and colleague, Neil Woodford.

Early-stage (healthcare)

Saku’s career began with many years at a senior level in the British Army, stationed at home and abroad. Prior to joining Woodford, his role was as Analyst and Investment Director for the Invesco Perpetual UK Equities team, where he was responsible for analysing investment opportunities and assisting Neil Woodford, with a specific focus on early-stage companies. Lucinda joined the team in 2015 from Panmure Gordon. Her diverse and illustrious career history includes analytical roles in large international banks focused on the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, as well as significant experience in the pharmaceutical industry itself.

Early-stage (technology and industry)

Paul began his career at Ernst and Young and his most recent role, prior to joining Woodford, was as a fund manager in the UK equities team at Invesco Perpetual. Harry – who joined the Woodford team in 2015 – holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics and Finance from the University of Bristol and the Investment Management Certificate. While studying, he completed internships as an Analyst at Kite Lake Capital and Fidelity Biosciences Venture Capital and on graduating, he joined FCA-regulated corporate financial adviser Envestors as an Investment Analyst.

Management team

It’s the job of our management team to ensure we deliver on our vision and ambition and build a strong and successful, transformational business with a distinctive culture. The team never loses sight of the fact that it’s someone else’s money we’re investing and maintains a shared and complete focus on client experience and outcomes.

These people are responsible for making the decisions as to how the business is run and therefore determine much about the experience our existing and potential investors have with Woodford. They’re always happy to hear from investors who want to let them know how they’re doing!

Chief Executive Officer

Our Chief Executive Officer – Craig Newman – is the driving force behind Woodford. He is responsible for leading the development and execution of the firm’s long-term strategy – and also ultimately responsible for all day-to-day management decisions.

The editorial team

Woodford’s editorial team is responsible for all client communication – ensuring we maintain a regular dialogue and deliver content that is of interest and value. We recognise that openness and transparency are key in building client understanding and our objective is to ensure that clients get unprecedented access to clear and relevant information about their investments and feel fully informed regarding our investment/fund-specific strategies, process and outlook. The team’s aim is to engage with the right people, in the right way, at the right time and we embrace new and emerging technology to facilitate the ongoing dialogue with current and prospective clients. The team includes the following individuals

Operations and technology

Our operations and technology team (which includes our investment operations and trading, finance, facilities management, human resources, security and technology functions) is responsible for the operation – and continual evolution – of our industry-leading infrastructure. Paul Green leads the team.

Paul and his team are supported – and challenged – in achieving their objectives by the business change function, which is headed by Vimal Patel.

Risk and compliance

Our risk and compliance teams are at the heart of our business. Head of Risk, Henry Tabe works closely with the management team to develop and embed a risk management culture within our organisation and to operate an effective risk management framework that provides support to all functions in recognising key business risks and mitigating them appropriately. Our Head of Compliance, Simon Osborne is responsible for ensuring that the partners, Chief Executive Officer, management team and employees of Woodford act in compliance with the rules of regulatory agencies and with the requirements and expectations of our clients, that company policies and procedures are being followed and that behaviour in the firm meets the company’s code of conduct.
